Most park-day problems are decided before you tap in: the family that reserved dining 60 days out, charged the battery pack, and picked its first two rides the night before has a very different noon than the family that winged it. This list is everything we remind ParkCharter families about, in the order it comes up, from a few weeks out through the fireworks. Pair it with the park guide for your day (all eight are linked below) and the boring parts are handled before the fun parts start.

A few weeks out

  • Buy park tickets and decide which park on which day
  • Reserve table-service dining (up to 60 days ahead at Disney)
  • Research Lightning Lane (Disney) or Express Pass (Universal) for your must-do rides
  • Download the official Disney and Universal apps and sign in
  • Check park hours, events, and ride refurbishments for your dates
  • Note height requirements for the kids' must-ride list

The night before

  • Charge every phone and a portable battery pack
  • Set an alarm for rope drop (aim to arrive 30 to 45 minutes before open)
  • Lay out comfortable shoes, clothes, and ponchos
  • Pack the day bag (checklist below)
  • Pick your first two or three rides and a mobile-order lunch spot

Day-bag packing

  • Refillable water bottles
  • Sunscreen and lip balm
  • Ponchos or a compact umbrella
  • Portable charger and cables
  • Snacks
  • Any medications
  • Hand sanitizer and wipes
  • Cooling towel or handheld fan
  • ID, payment, and room or ticket cards
  • Blister bandages and small first-aid basics

Rope drop and morning

  • Arrive early and tap in before official open
  • Head straight to your highest-demand ride first
  • Mobile-order lunch by about 10:30 to beat the rush
  • Refill water often and reapply sunscreen

Midday

  • Plan an indoor, air-conditioned block during the peak afternoon heat
  • Build in a midday break or hotel nap for little ones
  • Keep snacks handy to head off meltdowns

Skip-the-line, used well

  • Save paid Lightning Lane or Express for the longest-wait rides
  • Ride low-demand attractions standby in the morning
  • Check live wait times before crossing the park

Riding with kids

  • Confirm height requirements before you get in line
  • Use rider switch so adults can take turns on big rides
  • Have a kid-friendly alternative ready for height-gated rides
  • Agree on a meeting spot in case anyone gets separated

Evening

  • Find a fireworks or nighttime-show spot 30 to 45 minutes early
  • Save a couple of headliners for the last hour, when waits drop
  • If you are park-hopping, move after the dinner rush

Good to know

  • Locate first aid and the nearest restrooms when you arrive
  • Grab a stroller tag and note where stroller parking is
  • Lockers are available near the park entrances
